Nothing in a woodsman's clothing is of more importance than his foot dressing.
Moccasins made of caribou or moose are recommended for all but icy or snowy conditions, where a footpac is recommended instead. [I don't know much about those footpacs. You can also make your own mukluks in a survival situation.]
The shoes and stockings should fit snugly, so as not to chafe from friction, but they should on no account be tight enough to bind. The shoes should be well broken in before starting.
Leggings shouldn't be fastened with buckles, hooks, or springs.
