Fourfold Breath Meditation

Cultivating the art of relaxation is one of the most powerful tools you can have in your arsenal. Fortunately, there are many breathing techniques to help focus our mind in preparation for meditation and spiritual practices.

If you are new to magickal practice, you don’t know where to start or can’t make up your mind which technique to pick, I highly recommend starting with the Fourfold Breath.

A form of pranayama yoga, all it does is serve to ground you by aligning your body and mind through the rhythmic control of your breath.

Begin with the following pattern:

Step 1. Exhale, completely emptying your lungs. While doing so, count to four.

Step 2. Inhale while counting to four.

Step 3. Hold the breath while counting to four.

Step 4. Exhale while counting to four.

Rinse and repeat.

Remember, the lungs must be completely emptied with every exhalation and fully loaded with every inhalation.

What I like to do is count inhales and exhales on my right hand, and breath holding on my left hand.

How long should I breathe like this for?

Go for 10 minutes, twice a day.

How fast should I breathe?

The four count rhythm can be done quickly or slowly. This aspect depends largely on how comfortable you are, so feel free to adjust until you find your balance. It doesn’t have to go by the seconds on the clock if it doesn’t suit you. As long as you count to four, if it takes you eight seconds to finish your four count, that’s absolutely fine.

Once you establish your rhythm, bring your focus on your mind. Allow all thoughts to pass by you.

The Aes Dana

One interesting parallel with the Greeks is the existence of the aes dana in Irish culture. In ancient Ireland, only two classes of people were allowed to travel freely outside their own tuath, or kin
